The Certifications That Get You Hired on Gulf Coast Turnarounds

TWIC, OSHA 10/30, confined space, and rescue quals: the credentials we look for when hiring Gulf Coast turnaround crews.

Turnaround work along the Gulf Coast comes with strict safety requirements, and we need workers who are qualified and ready to step on-site. Experience matters most in hiring, but the right certifications get your application noticed. Here are four credentials worth having.

‍

TWIC Card

A Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is required for unescorted access to secure areas of certain maritime facilities, including many ports and terminals along the Gulf Coast. The TSA issues it after a background security assessment. Not every facility requires one, but having it opens doors at facilities with restricted access.

‍

OSHA 10 and OSHA 30

OSHA 10 covers basic workplace hazards and safety practices. OSHA 30 goes deeper and is intended for supervisors and workers with greater safety responsibilities. Some contractors and facilities require OSHA Outreach training as part of onboarding. These courses are not official certifications, but completing them shows you have foundational safety training, and we notice it on an application.

‍

Confined Space Training

Towers, vessels, and reactors are where much of turnaround work happens. These environments bring limited access, hazardous atmospheres, and restricted movement. Workers assigned to confined space operations must be trained for their specific responsibilities: entry permits, atmospheric testing, communication procedures, and emergency protocols.

For catalyst technicians and tower mechanics, this training is not optional background, it is the job. At Tray-Tec we run an on-site training tower, a dedicated space where personnel practice in the environments they will encounter in the field before they ever enter a column on a job site.

‍

Confined Space Rescue Qualifications

Rescue training is for workers assigned to emergency response and rescue teams. These personnel must know rescue procedures, equipment use, and how to respond when something goes wrong inside a confined space. Qualification takes specialized training and practical exercises. Hazardous or oxygen-deficient atmospheres require additional training on top.

‍

What Else We Look For

Credentials get your application noticed. They do not qualify you for every position. We also look for hands-on industrial experience, craft-specific skills, a strong safety record, and workers who can handle turnaround schedules. Site-specific training may be required depending on the facility and the work.

Getting Ready for Your Next Turnaround

Check your training records, confirm which credentials are required, and make sure your qualifications match the positions you are applying for. Tray-Tec provides catalyst, mechanical, and tower services across the Gulf Coast, and our crews train before they deploy. Get in touch to ask about openings.
