Mesh and vane mist eliminators both remove entrained liquid from gas streams. They work differently, and each suits different conditions. Selection comes down to droplet size, gas velocity, liquid loading, pressure drop limits, and what else is in the process fluid.
How Each Works
Mesh mist eliminators use layers of knitted wire formed into a pad. Gas passes through while droplets strike the wire, coalesce, and drain back down. Mesh captures fine droplets and is the standard choice when fine mist removal is the requirement and liquid loading is manageable.
Vane mist eliminators use a series of shaped passages that force the gas through directional changes. Droplets cannot follow the turns and separate by inertia onto the vane surfaces. Vanes handle higher gas velocities and higher liquid loads than mesh, and their open passages resist fouling that would blind a mesh pad.
What Drives the Decision
Droplet size. Mesh captures smaller droplets than vanes. If the downstream equipment is sensitive to fine mist, mesh is usually the answer.
Gas velocity. Every mesh pad has a velocity limit above which captured liquid re-entrains into the gas stream. Vanes keep separating well past that limit. High-velocity services, including compact separators and scrubbers at high rates, favor vanes.
Liquid loading. Mesh pads drain slowly. At high liquid loads they flood and carry over. Vanes drain faster and tolerate slugs and heavy loading.
Fouling and solids. Wax, solids, and polymerizing fluids plug mesh. Vane passages stay open longer in dirty service.
Pressure drop. Both are low, but the allowable budget still matters in vacuum and energy-limited systems. Review the limit before selecting element density or vane spacing.
Before You Select
Review the separator’s operating conditions, expected carryover, allowable pressure drop, and contamination potential. In some services the right answer is both: a mesh agglomerator upstream of vanes, using each element for what it does best.
